Oily skin types typically have frequent pimple outbreaks and small inflamed areas. This skin type is prone to acne and dermatitis. Excess sebum leaves oily skin with a neglected appearance, making it shiny and difficult to keep clean. Sun, alcohol, poor diet, stress, hormonal fluctuations, cold and damp climates aggravate the effects. Sebum inhibits water loss, so this alkaline skin type ages slower than other skin types. Those who think they may have oily skin issues must always remember to never confuse perspiration with oily breakouts. Acne is very common and effects more females than males. Although it starts in and is often associated with teenagers, it can recur for years, sometimes right into middle age. Acne typically appears as inflamed lumps under the skin and topped with black or white heads, that if squeezed, can set off a cycle of re-infection due to bacterial activity on the surface of the skin. The face is most likely the common affected area, but acne can also appear on the neck, shoulders, back and upper chest area. Those prone to acne should stay away from cosmetics, skin care and hair care products that contain any type of synthetic polymers, such as vinyl and other plastic based ingredient. These components in products such as hair spray block the larger pores, usually around the mouth, chin and sides of face, creating a 'no oxygen' environment. Many normal facial bacteria are low oxygen organisms and actually thrive in such conditions.
