How to Apply Powder Blush

Highlighting and Shading

Using and Applying Cheek Tints

A subtle sweep of blusher will lift your cheekbones and enhance your face. It is applied after foundation, although if you have clear skin you can wear it on it's own. Blush is one of the hardest cosmetics to apply and much be blended perfectly to ensure there are no harsh edges (using a good brush will make all the difference). Choose the color carefully. The right shade will make you look healthy while the wrong color will drain all the color from your face.

How to Apply Powder Blush - When applying blush, avoid overloading the brush with too much powder, excess blush will give a harsh, un-natural natural effect to the area it's applied to. It is far better to start light and build from there.
  • Step 1 - Pick up some color on the brush and tap the brush lightly on jar lid to get rid of any excess.
  • Step 2 - Using a sweeping motion, apply blush to apples of the cheekbones and sweep upward toward the top of the ears in a teardrop shape keeping in mind that the thinner part of the shape should be on top and wider part pointing toward your nose. Blend lightly into your foundation and at the hairline, without brushing any color into the hair.
  • Step 3 - If you find that you have over applied the blusher, brush over it with a little Finisher or Finalizer powder to lighten the effect and tone down the color. Once you have finished the rest of your makeup routine, check to see that you have applied enough blusher and if necessary, add a bit more color.
  • Step 4 - To unite the features, and create the illusion of a 'youthful' glow, dab blusher across forehead, nose and chin to reflect light.

Additional Tips

  • To find the 'apple' of your cheekbone, just simply stand in front of the mirror and smile at your beautiful self. The rounded pillowed area created while doing that should be the starting point.
  • For a slightly more girlish look using either powder or cream type blusher, apply circles of blusher on the apples of your cheeks only and blend well to fade the edges.
  • Cream blushers, which glide on easily, can be used to create a more natural look and works very will with liquid foundation. Using your finger tips, pick up some color and apply to the cheeks in a tear drop shape. Blend well using a gentle circular motion.

Highlighting and Shading - To make the most of what nature gave you, it may be worth practicing a little shading and highlighting. Using the blusher sparingly, applying it well and blending carefully, the effect will add definition to your face. However, some light highlighting to the top of the cheekbones can really bring out your cheekbones during the day, the act of shading AND highlighting should be restricted to night time as it will can be obvious in natural daylight. This method below does require a lot of practice to get it perfectly right. Don't give up after your first try, just remember that practice makes perfect!
  • When using blush to shade and highlight your cheeks, it is easiest to use powder blush products. If possible use different brushes to apply the products and to blend. Choose colors that are from same family (lighter and darker pinks, lighter and darker peaches, rather than shades that are obviously different from each other), as this will create a more natural and modern look.
  • Remember that dark colors shade and make areas recede. Use the deeper toned color in the hollows of the cheek to accentuate their depth. A trick to keep the whole thing looking natural is also to shade the temples, under the chin and down the sides of your nose.
  • If you shade, then you must highlight to keep the look balanced. So, using the lighter cheek color, gently sweep over the apples of your cheeks and under the eye socket, across your brow bone, and add a light dab to the center of your chin.

Want a little highlight to lighten your day?

  • If you do not fancy coating your cheeks with color, and just want a light sexy highlight to the face, try applying one of our lightly colored Illuminating Dusting Powders to the cheeks and temples for a brighter youthful look.

Using and Applying Cheek Tints - Cheek tints and stains are great for a natural, fresh-faced look while lasting through out the day. They can be worn over foundation, or under powder blush for added color. Layer for more intense color, being sure to blend edges.
  • The Super Naturals Cheek and Lip Tint - Shake well before use to properly mix colorants and liquid. Simply apply a dab to the cheeks, blending well.
  • Aloe Colors - Shake bottle and apply a single dot of color to each cheek and blend in with fingers. For deeper coloring, apply an additional dot of color on top and blend again.

More Color Choosing Help - The crucial point about choosing colors is not to set yourself with too many rules. All to often we have been told to stick with colors that suit our tone, compliment our hair colors and eyes. These are great rules for the all over natural look, but this kind of approach is very limiting. It is only by experimenting with different color palettes and by breaking some of the 'rules', that you will be able to find the makeup colors that work best for you.
Just for the sake of color choosing, we have included the color tone tables for an added convenience.

  • Olive Tone Ideas
    • Dark Hair / Olive Skin - Compliment olive skin and dark brown eyes with warm deep shades that look strong but natural. Darker mauves, pinks and blues make an unusual alternative and extra radiance. Dark pink warm toned blushes look striking on olive toned skin.
    • Light Brown Hair / Olive Skin - The gold flecked undertones of light olive coloring are brought to life with warm shades. Orangey 'terra cotta', peach and soft browns work wonders with this coloring. Pearly light purples and grays are colorful options as well. A lovely apricot shade for the cheeks will enhance the golden tones of this skin coloring.
  • Fair Skin Ideas
    • Red Hair / Pale skin - Pale redheads look good in warm shades that help to enhance their natural creamy tones. But brighter colors can make an exciting contrast, and blue and bronze look great with blue eyes. Light apricot colored blushes are a flattering gentle color choice for this coloring and orangey 'terra cotta' shades will give extra definition to the cheeks.
    • Fair Hair / Pale Skin - Cool toned makeup, such as mauve and cool blues are a dramatic option for this coloring, but soft, pastels in a cool toned palette work very well for decidedly pretty effect. Pretty rose pink color blushes give this coloring a healthy glow, while warm apricot shades are bolder for more emphasis.
  • Asian Skin Ideas
    • Deep Yellow Toned Skin / Dark Hair and Eyes - Warm colors, such as apricots and orangey 'terra cottas', flatter this kind of coloring. Pearly bright metallic shades also work well and help lift the face, but they must be perfectly blended. A soft pink blush is very pretty when wearing pastels, while orangey 'terra cotta' lends a more dramatic sophisticated look.
    • Pale Toned Skin / Dark Hair and Eyes - Neutral shades on the eyes and the deep color on the lips are the traditional choices for the coloring. Create more modern impact with brighter, vibrant colors such as light and dark purples to wear with pastels or light oranges and bright yellow for a more colorful option. Soft brown colored blushes look gentle and flattening, while light 'terra cotta' shades add a little strength to the features.
  • Dark and Black Skin Ideas
    • Warm beiges, golden brown, burgundy and orangey 'terra cottas' are the play safe color choices for dark and black skins. Be more adventurous by creating a contrast with pearly purples and bright blues. Natural tawny brown blushes are a gentle and easy to wear color choice for these beautiful dark skins. Deep lilacs colored blushes pair perfectly with pastel color eye shadow choices as well.
